One of the biggest perks of living in Paris is being is having so many professional beauty brands at your fingertips! While online shopping is easy and accessible, it will never replace walking into a store, feeling the products, and swatching the colors directly on your skin.

But, shopping for makeup can be overwhelming because there is so much information available, and so many brands and formulas to try that you don’t even know where to start. It took me many years as a beauty professional to have a clear understanding of what ACTUALLY WORKS for every person out there, and I want to share that with you.

Imagine going on a makeup shopping spree with a professional makeup artist, and picking out the perfect products for your skin tone, color and style preferences, and personal beauty needs. Now imagine doing this in Paris - the capital of fashion, cosmetics, and timeless glamour! NOT IN PARIS AT THE MOMENT BUT STILL WANT TO SHOP LIKE A PRO? Check out some of my tips below to make the most out of your makeup shopping experience:

1. Do your research

If you are ready for something new and want to give your makeup drawer a makeover, look into which products you’d like to buy first. Need a new eye shadow palette? Search for ‘eye shadow’ palettes on Google, Instagram, and anywhere else you see fit. Read reviews, look at photos of other people wearing them, etc. This will prepare you for what’s out there, help you establish a solid shopping list and budget, and ensure you are prepared when you walk into a store so you don’t get distracted by all the pretty (I mean, unless you want to be distracted!)

2. Do some digging

Before you jump into shop mode, look through EVERYTHING you own, and see if there is anything you can still use but have forgotten. We rarely go through a full product because there is so much out there, but the truth is that some products are worth finishing up. Of course, be sure to check for expiration dates, and toss anything that’s no longer usable (good bye old lipsticks!). This will also free up your space for your new goodies, so you can start using them right away.

3. Bring a friend

It’s always a great idea to bring a friend when you are shopping, am I right? Friends can help you see things you don’t see for yourself, take photos of you from far away to ensure a foundation truly matches, and give you a second opinion without the pressure of you having to buy something. Bring a friend who likes makeup, or that artsy friend who’s always been good with colors. Ask your friend to hold you accountable if you get lost in the sea of choices, and help you get back to your list of must-haves.
